This movie is based on the book Coraline by Neil Gaiman. Coraline is feeling neglected and bored by her parents in her new home. While exploring, she finds a secret door that has been bricked up. In this frightful movie, Coraline gets up during the night to inspect the hidden door. She enters the spooky passage and crosses over into another dimension.

This new world is a mirror image of her own, but her parents are nice, and everything she craves is available to her. The only weird thing about this new place is that everyone has buttons for eyes. Coraline’s new mother with the button eyes invites her to stay in this world forever. When she refuses, Coraline is struck with the reality of this new place. The Nightmare Before Christmas

In this macabre story among Coraline movie recommendations, we meet Jack Skellington. Jack is the pumpkin king of Halloween Town. Jack is getting bored of the same frightful celebrations and wants something new. Accidentally, Jack ends up in a forest with magical doors. One of them leads him to Christmas Town.

He is over-the-moon, this place is magnificent. He must recreate it in Halloween Town. On his return, Jack tries to get the ghouls, goblins, and other creepy creatures of Halloween Town to participate in his new idea. The residents give it their best shot but fail miserably. The Nightmare Before Christmas is a cult classic and very similar to the button eyes movie called Coraline.

Corpse Bride

Corpse Bride takes place in a Victorian village, in the late 1800’s. Victoria Everglot and Victor Van Dort are about to wed, one family wants the raise in society and one family wants the money that comes from the marriage. During the rehearsal, all goes wrong, so Victor escapes to the woods to go over his vows. Victor finally gets them right but by doing so he finds out that he has married a corpse bride called Emily. Meanwhile, another man is out for his betrothed, Victoria. Victor must choose between two brides before he loses them both in this haunted story called Corpse Bride, found on our list of movies like Coraline for kids.

9 is one of the most original films like Coraline, it is set in a post-apocalyptic nightmare. Man and machine have come to war and destroyed the world. In the debris a hand-stitched doll comes back to life, he has the number 9 on his back.

9 quickly realizes there are others like him, each with their own number. When he runs into number 2, he is told that the disk he is holding is part of a bigger plan to save humanity. Number 9 and the other dolls are prepared to die for the good of mankind in this creepy addition to movies like Coraline.

Frankenweenie is a dark adaptation, pulled straight from Tim Burton’s mind. Poor Victor’s dog Sparky was just killed by a passing car. Victor is sad and wants him back, doing so the only way he knows how. Victor brings Sparky back in a Frankenstein-esque way, bolts included.

Chaos and havoc are destroying the neighborhood. Everyone wants Sparky back in the grave. Victor knows this isn’t because of his dog, and he must prove it before he loses his best friend forever. This movie called Frankenweenie must be added to the list of horror movies for kids.

Monster House


Voices: Ryan Newman, Nick Cannon, Steve Buscemi, and Mitchel Musso

D.J. Walters is a very imaginative boy. Everything he says is exaggerated. D.J. tries to tell everyone around him that his neighbor’s house is alive. Bikes go missing, toys get swallowed up, and even Mrs. Nebbercracker, his neighbor’s wife, has mysteriously disappeared. Due to his stories, no one believes him.

In this scary tale, things are about to get much worse, and even an over creative imagination like D.J.’s can’t imagine what is about to happen. Monster House is about a house that tries to eat children, which makes this animation a must add addition to our list of  Coraline movie recommendations.

In Paranorman, we meet Norman Babcock, he can speak to the dead. His best friend Neil is the only one who believes he has this ability. Norman is approached one day by his crazy uncle who tells Norman that he must assist in the annual town ritual of Blithe Hollow to protect it from a witches curse.

Unfortunately, the plan goes sour and the witch creates a magic storm that raises the dead. In this child zombie addition to Coraline movie recommendations, Norman teams up with a motley crew to save the town and defeat the witch before zombies take over his Blithe Hollow.

James And The Giant Peach


Voices: Simon Callow, Richard Dreyfuss, Jane Leeves, and Paul Terry

Movie suggestions for Coraline should include, Roald Dahl’s classic dream-like story, James and the Giant Peach. When James’s parents are killed by a rhinoceros, he must go live with his horrible aunts. Saving a spider from death gives James some magic boiled crocodile tongues, which, when added to a garden, grows into an enormous peach.

Curiously, James explores the inside of this humongous peach and meets the spider he saved and numerous ” buggy ” friends. They all agree to help James get to New York. James and the Giant Peach is utterly delightful, with just a touch of creepy, and must be mentioned among flicks like Coraline.

*** There are Disney whispers of a live action movie for James and the Giant Peach. Fingers crossed.

Hotel Transylvania

Dracula is a father in this frightful addition to Coraline alternatives. He builds a Transylvanian, monster resort in 1895, for his daughter and to hide from humans. Now, years later, monsters escape the scary humans to this blissful retreat.

Mavis’s 118th birthday is approaching, and Dracula is inviting all their monster friends to the celebration. When the party starts, a knock is heard at the front door. When Dracula opens it, he sees a human boy standing at his doorstep. Quickly, he tries to hide the human from his guests. This is just the beginning of a hilarious adventure packed full of monsters.

Hotel Transylvania will beat your expectations for movies similar to Coraline, it will become a family favorite.
