7 Great Dog Movies Like Hachi: A Dog’s Tale

There’s something about our canine companions that just gets to us. Our furry friends touch our hearts in ways that humans can’t always manage. Maybe that’s why some of the best dog movies are also the best movies around.

Hachi: A Dog’s Tale is the true story of a very special bond between a man and his dog. Hachi, is an Akita named after the Japanese number eight ‘hachiko.’ Eight is considered to be a lucky number in Japan. Hachi’s tag was lost during his shipment on a train, and he is discovered and taken in by Professor Parker Wilson.

The film, which is an American adaptation of a story that was originally told in Japanese, unfolds in the form of a flashback, as a little boy writes a paper about his hero, the dog Hachi.  Parker and Hachi bond in that special way that truly proves that dog is man’s best friend. The dog walks his master to the train station every day to see him off to work, and waits for him when he arrives home each afternoon.

The dog in this movie has several reincarnations and several owners, and with each, he learns a little more about life. A Dog’s Purpose will make you laugh, it will make you cry, and it will make you forget about all the negativity in the world. A Dog’s Purpose is a masterpiece.

Eight Below


Starring: Paul Walker, Bruce Greenwood, Frank Marshall

Eight Below must be added to our list of dog movie suggestions. This top dog movie tells the story of an Antarctic guide team that is rescued by eight sled dogs, but forced to temporarily abandon them due to harsh weather conditions. When the evacuation becomes drawn out over the winter season, the points of view flip back and forth between the determined would-be rescuer and the dogs themselves, who are trying to make it on their own in the wild. Eight Below shows us just how strong a bond can be between man and dog.

Marley and Me


Starring: Owen Wilson, Jennifer Aniston

You can’t really even think about creating a list of best dog movies without thinking of Marley and Me right away. In this, the most highly recommended of our funny dog movies, the Grogan family adopts Marley, a cute but incorrigible yellow lab. Marley’s antics provide writer John Grogan with material for his newspaper column and instill a sense of fun and laughter for the whole family. The film follows Marley throughout his entire life, and although it is also one of the best sad dog movies before it is over, this film truly deserves a spot on our list of movies like Hachi: A Dog’s Tale. Snow Dogs

The third of our movie recommendations is Snow Dogs. This white dog movie is about a dentist who inherits a team of arctic sled dogs from his mother. Misadventures ensue as he tries to reign them in, and learn to work with them to win a local race. This is one of the funny dog movies that is a pleasure to watch for the whole family. The Disney Snow Dogs movie might not the be the newest movie on our list, but it is one of the best.

Turner And Hooch


Starring: Tom Hanks, Mare Winningham, Craig T. Nelson

This classic top dog movie stars Tom Hanks as a detective who adopts the dog of a victim in a murder investigation because the canine might hold the key to solving the crime. What begins as a reluctant and grudging partnership (complete with lots and lots of drool), turns into a story of mutual love, respect, and sacrifice. Turner and Hooch is powerful, touching, and has an amazing cast, for all these reasons and more, we must add this dog film to our list.

The last spot on our list of great dog movies like Hachi: A Dog’s Tale goes to My Dog Skip. Lonely outcast Willie Morris receives a dog named Skipper (‘Skip’ for short) for his ninth birthday. As Willie grows from boy to man, and navigates the confusing path of childhood and adolescence, his dog Skip is always there by his side. The little terrier becomes not only a steadfast best friend to Willie, but a fixture that the whole community learns to love. My Dog Skip is a masterpiece, if you haven’t seen it, watch it, you won’t be disappointed.
